Purpose of the Role

The African Medicines Agency (AMA) was established through the AMA Treaty, adopted on 11 February 2019, and became operational on 5 November 2021. The AMA aims to enhance the capacity of State Parties and Regional Economic Communities to regulate medical products, ensuring access to quality, safe, and effective medical products across the continent.

The AMA consists of four main bodies: the Conference of State Parties, the Governing Board, the Secretariat, and Technical Committees focused on scientific assessments and inspections.

The Director General (DG) serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the AMA, responsible for daily operations and representation. The DG is appointed for a renewable four-year term based on recommendations from the Governing Board.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic guidance for administrative and operational developments.
  • Oversee the preparation of strategic plans, budgets, and reports for the Governing Board.
  • Ensure effective recruitment, training, and retention of staff to achieve the Agency’s mission.
  • Manage personnel, budgets, and training conforming to relevant rules.
  • Lead performance management and promote a culture of efficiency and innovation.
  • Act as Secretary to the Governing Board and develop policies aligned with AMA goals.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders in National Medicines Regulatory Authorities and Regional Economic Communities.
  • Mobilize resources for AMA activities and oversee the collection of funds.
  • Advocate for the adoption of the AU Model Law on medical product regulation.

Specific Duties

  • Communicate and implement the vision and mission of the AMA.
  • Develop strategic goals and oversee policy planning.
  • Coordinate activities with multi-lateral agencies and partners.
  • Ensure the Agency has a viable annual work plan and budget.
  • Promote a culture that attracts and retains qualified staff.
  • Represent the AMA in all internal and external affairs.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) or Medicine (MD) required; PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or medical fields, with at least 8 years in a managerial role.
  • Experience in public health and international program management is advantageous.

Additional Information

Tenure of Appointment: The DG serves a term of 4 years, renewable once.
